I have a rather odd setup.

I need to rebuild my shed. The odd part is it has a full basement (thats were the still was hidden:whistling2.

I am thinking of using it as a pottery studio somewhere down the road, so I want to run water and upgrade the power to a 50 amp sub panel or better. currently it has power i the form of the old 2 wire stuff with the ceramic insulators buried in the yard. somehow it still works, but it needs to be upgraded

I'd prefer not digging a deep trench between the house and the shed, destroying my sidewalk in the process. Can I just drill a hole in 1 wall, hammer a pipe through the dirt, then hopefully figure out were it is trying to come through on the other wall? Both basement walls are old poor quality concrete, maybe a foot thick. Or is this just a wild dream that will cause me much more work in the long run?

The distance between the structures would be a pertinient detail. Maybe the soil type.
If it was under 10 feet I guess you could give it a shot. Dig down on the receiving end to see where in the wall it hit and drill through the foundation.
You would need 2 pipes. One for electric and one for water.
How would you drain the water in the potting shed? Plumbing codes might apply.

I was planning on running a pex line and the wire inside the same metal driven pipe. The buildings are fairly close 10' might be the distance if I go with a slight angle like I think I'll have to. Soil should be pretty sandy. I was planning on skipping the drain. Just toss the water on the lawn. Clay isn't toxic, but can clog up a drain like nobodies business.

You can't run the PEX in the same conduit as the electrical.

I'm not sure I see the danger if the wire is rated for direct burial.

Sometimes building codes overrule personal opinions. but it's your house.

Building codes overrule ALL opinions.

I think if you study the NEC, you fill find that direct burial cable cannot be placed in a raceway. Has to do with heat rating. I don't have my cheatbook in front of me to cite it for you, i'd say around 300-305 is the section or something like that.

And if you put THWN/THHN/THWN2 in a raceway you can't put a water pipe in the same raceway.

direct burial is rated for less amps in a conduit because of the heat, but it can be put in there.

I used to be on a well and then the municipality brought water down our road.
My house is 90 feet from the road and the contractor used a pneumatic device to run the water line into my house.
They had a hole dug at the street connection and another where it was to enter the house.
They started the ram at the street. It hammered its way to the 2nd hole at the house. When it arrived, the water line was pulled through with a cable that was drawn through with the ram.
In a few hours, I had my water service and without any surface damage.
This is common procedure and you can probably find a contractor in your area that does this sort of thing.
I would think that a direct burial cable could be installed using the same method.
