I recently got a tear off on my roof. The roofer put drip edges on the gables of the roof. The roofer removed old gutters. I plan to get new gutters from leaf guard. From what I can see there is no drip edge in the front and in the back were the gutters hanged before. The gutters have been removed, and you can see about two inches of overlap ice and water shield. Is it normal not to put any drip edges by the gutters. If at all possible what can I do?:confused1:

The contract stated putting drip edges on the gable ends of the roof. Can the drip edges be added once the company puts the gutters on? I spoke with the roofer today, and he said the two inch overlay of the ice and water shield would be mounted to fascia board with new gutters? What should I do?:furious:

Many roofers do run the Ice & water shield over the edge down onto the fascia
Most then put drip edge over I&W before roofing

If the contract stated that you are to get drip edges, then the time to put them on is before the gutters go on and in fact they are usually put on prior to the installation of shingles. However, with a starter course of shingles and the ice and water dam extending beyond the roof substrate, you are unlikely to have a problem. The drip edge would be additional insurance against a problem.
What bothers me is that your roofer skimped on a relatively inexpensive item, probably to save time. I hope he did not short-change you anywhere else.

The drip edge on the eave side is usually 3 1/2" on the roof edge while the drip edge on the rake is only 1 1/2". Seems to show some reasoning that the missing edge is slightly more important. Anyway it goes on first. Everything else is installed over it. It allows protection from wind driven rain, while the others items (starter shingles and ice and weather will not.) also it kicks the water up at the edge into the gutter as well as stopping water from surface tension to run back up into the roof. So again it is important and it shows your roofer was a hack not a roofer.

You agreed in your contract that they would not be included.

Did you think that he would add them in as a token good gesture, even though he did not specify including them?

This is why it is key to interview each contractor you are getting proposals from and ask and VERIFY that what you expect is included.

The gutter company can put them in also, but I feel it is best practice to install the Gutter Apron Drip Edge Metal prior to the roofing shingles being installed.

The gutters will cover up the excess Ice and Water Shield that wraps the fascia board, so that should not be a problem in the future, depending on how long it is exposed to the sun, prior to the gutters getting installed.

The roof is done. I guess I have no chance to put gutter apron on. But the gutters will be install this Thursday. What do you suggest I should do?
