We acquired a house recently, there is a low slope roof portion of the home at the rear of the house, think of an enclosed finished Florida room (yes, in Florida). On exterior the sides of this attachment to the house there is no soffit, on the rear there is a soffit (see pictures). On the vinyl siding portion of two walls with no soffit, there is a drip edge under the vinyl siding, under that is tar paper, then the exterior t1-11 sheathing. I cant find any details as to how the vinyl siding should be set up with drip edge on a wall with no soffit. I would think a z-bar under the drip edge then over the vinyl siding would be beneficial, otherwise water will run off the drip edge then behind the vinyl siding then where??

Its hard to describe, check out my pictures.

thanks!

There should be a Z flashing at the bottom of the vinyl too. They should have come up with some way to extend the drip edge. I would be wondering what is hidden under the tar paper,, did they add foam insulation or some rot they didn't want to fix?

It looks like someone added the siding after the roof was on, perhaps at a later date. It also looks like horizontal siding was installed vertically. On a drip edge, underlayment goes on top of the drip edge. On a rake, rake edge goes on top of the underlayment.

Can you see enough of the drip edge to give us some idea what style it is and how far does it stick out from the tar paper?

I removed most of the vinyl siding to check the plywood substrate and it was mostly fine, the bottom showed evidence of water ( of course, no Z flashing). However, at the shingled roof connection there was lots of rot in the plywood and the beginnings of the stud and top plate starting to rot. The flashing from the roof was dumping water right behind the vinyl siding, I cut out all of the rotted plywood, coated the area in a paint on water proofing membrane, paper'd, added flashing, and replaced the siding. I dont expect it to be waterproof for ever, but it will work for now.

I am debating tearing off all the vinyl siding, redoing drip edge to come out past the sheathing, and just doing more t1-11.

Attached is picture from where it continues out of the siding to the soffit. Its this drip edge continuous down the entire side. (sorry pic is rotated)

And it maybe kicks out 1/16" if that in some spots.

Yes, its starting to look this way. Under the vinyl I found painted plywood in some areas! And good to know, I didn't realize it would be over the underlayment on rakes. Thanks!
