I installed a new vanity recently (from Pedestal Sink) and the drain tailpiece doesn’t line up with the P Trap. I tried using a flex pipe to connect it but now it’s randomly leaking at the P Trap elbow. (Never did this before).

1. What should I use to replace the flex pipe?

2. How do you stop a P trap from leaking besides tightening it?

FYI- the P trap is brass

You will need a straight chrome tail piece extension. You could pick up a 12" and can cut it to length after you dry fit. As Neil mentioned, you may need a longer trap arm. And by the looks of the corrosion on the trap that is not going to be long before it starts leaking as well. Might want to just buy a new trap kit, but you will still need the extension.

Thanks!
Would it matter if I replaced the trap with PVC? Is mixing brass and PVC okay?

I agree with you to switching to all pvc. Not that expensive and will last for a very long time. Granted the chrome does look better, however, as you stated, you switched out pedestal with a vanity so not many will see it. Do not use any flex pipe/trap. Just my opinion.

Think I will be able to do this without opening up the wall?

Why open the wall? That trap arm just slides out of the drain pipe after nut is loosened. As stated, just adjust/cut trap arm and tailpiece as needed so everything lines up correctly. That chrome escutcheon cover slides off.

You may need to buy the trap arm. Some kits don't have them bundled. Don't use any flex pipe or traps.

Piece of cake, imo, any homeowner can do this.

If you need assistance, or additional help, there are plenty of utube videos out there showing how to do this step by step. Recommend you watch a couple of them.

Biggest mistake people make is not using the little nylon washers or putting them in the wrong direction. It's very important that they are positioned correctly or it will leak. There is a bevel side and flat side. Make sure they are in the right direction.

Pick up a couple extra nylon washers. Make sure they are the right size for your pipe. They are cheap. Don't use the old ones. Just a suggestion.

Easy button to me would be to just shorten the tailpiece...

Hmm? The tail piece is already too short. The trap arm may or may not also be too short. I don't see anything that can be shortened.
I think they are recommending to keep flex piece and shorten the tail.

I’m probably just gonna replace the P trap. I think they cut the arm short with this one so it didn’t stick out too much with the pedalstal sink.

Thanks!
