I am trying to install a new doorbell transformer (I did not have one previously) and am splicing into an existing wire. The wire is a 4 wire (green, white, black, red) and the transformer is a 3 wire. When I spliced into the existing wire I attached all similar color wire and then connected the red wire back to itself (it had been cut) and the red wire is not wired to the transformer. The transformer doesn't seem to be working and one of the lights in the house won't turn off (3 way switch). Should I be doing something different with the red wire?

It sound like you spliced into a 3 wire cable connecting 2 three way switches. Find another source to power the xformer.

Doorbell transformers typically power only doorbells or possibly a thermostat. Where are you located and what types of lights are these that are not working?
