Door Threshold

3195 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  chrisBC
I just bought a house in the Outer Banks and found the threshold on one door to be completely rotted. My experience is that you can replace the threshold but I've had two contractors tell me they want to replace the entire door and framing etc. So I went from what I thought would be a $100 repair to about $650. Can anyone validate my hypothesis that the treshold can be replaced?

Do it all the time.........

Post a pic and we'll take you thru the process.

Some people telling you they want to replace the whole door are Newbies that have been taught that everything is remove & replace......no repairs.

I wish I could.....no photos. I took movies as I was leaving the house which was a bad idea....should have taken a photo. Sorry, but thanks for the vote of confidence....I don't believe you have to replace an entire door...!

Hi there,
What you probably have is a beveled sill.

You install it with long portion on about a 9 degree angle and
the narrow flat portion level and under the door.
Usually there is another piece that sits on top of the flat
part and covers the gap between sill and interior floor.

Cut out the old one and shape the new piece to fit in the same location.
Make sure that there is good support under the new sill. You may have
to add something under where it will sit to hold it up.

Slide it into place from the outside and nail it to your backing.
Construction adhesive is helpful underneath the sill.

I hope that helps a bit!

Sure you can replace just the threshold.

It may be worth removing the door to inspect for more rot though, guess it depends on whether there is evidence of any rot in the framing. If so not a big deal to pull the door out, make sure all issues are addressed.
