Ok I have an smaller house with standard/boring door moulding and would like to replace it. The current moulding is 2 1/4 inch wide plain and outdated. I would like to replace it with something more modern and decorative but have a few problems...
1) I have an area where my bathroom door moulding meets a bedroom door's moulding and the seam is covered by quarter round. What can I do to make the juncture look better and fit in with a more decorative moulding? Would shrinking the bathroom door from 28 to 24 inches to accomodate a more decorative moulding be a bad idea? Any other ideas?
2) I have another bedroom where the moulding buts up against a wall. This doesnt give me room to go with a moulding that has decorative corners that are wider than the moulding.

Does anybody have some ideas how to fit a more modern decorative moulding into tight spots?

There are 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 colonial trim that are the usual choices to replace common ranch molding. Check local homes stores or lumber yards for samples of profiles.

When there is not enough space there isn't much you can do. Only rip the moulding to butt up against the adjacent ripped moulding. Do it nicely and the seam will not need to be covered. If it is an uneven rip just scribe it carefully. I always try to avoid 2-0 doors for a bath entry, 2-4 are much more user friendly and they look nicer. good luck.

So you have two 2 1/4" moulding that almost butt up against each other? Why not trim out the whole thing with 1x3 with a solid piece of 1x6 ripped to size to span the middle? Use some nice corner rosettes to finish the look.
