door jamb hinge-side repair

13812 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  morgana
I have a 15" split in the door jamb hinge-side I'd like to try to repair. The split goes from the top of the door jam, through all 3 hinge-screw-holes and another 6" down, preventing me from moving the hinge down. How deep would I cut and chisel and what kind of wood would be best for this
not to be a wast of time. The door is an origninal craftsman door. (approx 30lb)

I would try glueing the frame first. Take the door out of the opening and remove the hinge. Open the seam and fill it with glue. Get the gue in the crack as deep as you can. Close the crack and either nail or screw the frame edge. Let is stand 24 hours and the reinstall the door and hinge.

What Ron said, and, pull off the trim and dowel in several places, with lots of glue. When you replace the hinge, use long screws that get into the house framing, but don't over tighten.
ok thanks I'll try
