Howdy.

Sure could use a suggestion.

I recently completed my bathroom re-build and put on a coat of paint that we've unfortunately decided that we don't care for now that it's up on the wall. I'd like to keep the project moving along so I waited 6 hours for the paint to set-up and tried to cut-in with a primer to prepare for the new color. The primer is not adhering well to the paint. It appears to stick in spots but in others completely resists the surface.

Here are the details.

Started with new wall board, primed with Kilz2.
Colored paint - Valspar Ultimate Premium Eggshell finish (latex) - deep blue color.
Valspar re-coat time is 2 to 4 hours.
Attempted to prime with Kilz2 about 6 hours after completing the color coat. I called the KILZ folks prior to applying and asked how soon I can apply the primer after the color coat application. They said whatever the recoat time is for the paint.

Since the Valspar instructions said that it can be recoated in 2 to 4 hours, should I just buy the new color I want and start painting? I'm thinking that maybe there is a chemical incompatibility with Kilz2 and Valspar. I really don't want to sand the surface to get the next layer of paint to stick. Blue paint dust in a brand-new mostly white bathroom just is not a good thing.

Thanks for your help.

when they say recoat they are assuming you are putting another coat of the same paint on. my son and uncle both tried valspar paint and both were not pleased with the performance of it. let it dry overnight and then just paint the new color over it.

You don't need to reprime. That said, you should have no problem in 6 hours unless it is a situation where the humidty from the paint can't get out of the room.
Try putting a fan blowing air in or out, should be go to go soon.
Unless you bought real cheapo sucky paint. There's always that.

Brushjocky, DannyT - Thanks for the advice. I'll turn a fan on to get some circulation and let it dry overnight. Sounds like the best bet is to just put the new color over the old and see what happens. I'll post how it all turns out.

Thanks again.. r/Tom
