So never did get fireplace surround done on gas fireplace yet. House few years old now and I should probably finish alot of things. So they legs going up is plywood boxes and I used some left over hickory engineered hardwood flooring to wrap them. The top mantel is just scrap ikea shelf I ran through table saw just to "visualize" what mantel on top would look like. Legs look alittle plain too me. Going for a rustic look though. I will be tiling wall around fireplace to match hearth. Too big? Too small? Just bad all together?

I would like something like this but this is pricey and I cannot find a place that has old reclaimed lumber from barn beams etc

My best method to determining size and proportion?

Make a mock up--I use sheets of Styrofoam and tape---sit and look at the mock up for a day or two---

As to interesting wood? Google 'sawmills (and your area)" or Architectural salvage
