Those button diodes they use to push so hard, that you put in the lamp socket to cut down on electric use?

Thanks PaliBob,
I saw an ad for some suspect energy saving devices and the memory of those devices came forth. I just could remember when or what they were called.
I think some of those disks caught fire.

A 3A, 400 PIV diode may work for up a 60w incand. My two front 40w lights keep burning out so I may put a diode in each, but in free air inside the lantern box, not in the socket.
Or, wire the two lamps in series at the junction box, if the brightness isn't too uneven.

Wouldn't it be easier to just put in a dimmer switch? Or perhaps to switch to appliance bulbs.

The 3 gang switch box for the lights is full.

Or perhaps to switch to appliance bulbs.
I guess appliance bulbs are OK for outdoors, but we're looking for that teardrop shape.
