Putting up some 2.7" crown around the ceiling of my daughter's room.

I've never hung it before and wondered if I need a backing strip for something that small?

In principle it seems like it would be less hassle to put the strips at intervals around the room and just tap into those versus the alternative.

For light moldings you can strike a line, glue the wall lightly and nail into the drywall. Glue is doing the work. Construction glue. Any squeeze out, scrape off before you move on to the next piece.

stupid question, but that glue really holds? a nailing drywall isn't doing much of anything, right?

Do you have a brand of the glue to recommend/view?

What have done several times and it works but its also extra work but it looks fantastic. I buy base molding that match the rooms base. Turn it upside down run along the ceiling then put crown over it. It give that small crown some bulk.

ok, another question. There is a lot technique as I'm listening to folks.

What's the deal with coping saws? Is it really easier, or at least a bonafide method, to cut flat on the miter and using the coping saw?

Coping does work better on an inside corner than trying to cut a perfect miter. But you don't necessarily need a coping saw. Rasp or dremel tool can work too. Depends on the hardness of the molding. mdf or polyurethane cuts very easily. Paint grade softwood normally cuts easily, but you will find a couple of pieces that are harder than others. Maple -- pretty tough stuff
