It's best to remove the tape before the paint dries. Once the paint has dried there is a paint bond between the tape and the wall. Unless you cut that bond you run the risk of the tape pulling some paint off of the wall when you remove it. Removing the tape early also it makes it easier to clean up any paint that either seeps beneath the tape or where the tape wasn't applied as good as you thought.

When masking for trim, there is a window of time where you dont want to pull tape, as the trim enamel is very rubbery, but hasnt 'bit' into the surface yet, so its prone to pull off with the tape. My rule is, either pull it while its wet, which only works if you're doing something small, or wait a day so the paint can cure and stick to the trim better, and have less chance of pulling up in a rubber sheet.
