I had a tile backsplash put in my kitchen today. They didn't put box extenders in to cover the space the tiles take up. Is that necessary? Obviously there isn't anything less combustible than tile, but code isn't always reasonable. Thanks.

The box can be setback no more than 1/4" in a noncombustible surface.

I'd use box extenders. They are quite inexpensive and easy to install. Chances are, nobody would ever notice that your receptacles don't meet code, but I like to do things right.

Most tile is 1/4, if your boxes were flush before you tiled, you are OK.
