I know it would be good to use green wire nuts to connect ground wires, but is it required per code?

Something is required, not just greenies.
Crimps and regular wire nuts are also fine, but you need something. Just twisting is not enough.

Yeah, I know that. I have wire nuts, just not green ones. I didn't end up buying green ones since the quantities at the store far exceeded what I needed. So I'll be using red or yellow (depending on my wires sizes/number of wires).
