Wife and i are remodeling a rental house. Some of the countertops we've looked at do not show a vent for the dishwasher. Are they no longer required, or are they hidden somewhere now?

Are you referring to the air gap that is seen on the counter top or sink? They are not required where I'm at. But I have to attach the DW drain line to the bottom side of the counter instead. Most other areas seem to require them though. As for vents- DW do not require them but the fixture it drains to does.

The air gap was required where I lived in Oregon, but apparently not here in Maine, so I guess its dependent on your locality. I recently had to deal with this in my new home, where the DW was plumbed wrong in many ways. Make sure that the DW drain hose loops up to just below the counter top, to avoid siphoning of water out of the DW tub. Best way to run the drain is through the kitchen sink drain, as it makes use of the existing trap and vent.

thanks fellas
yes i guess it's called an air gap. My house has one, my previous house had one. It will be plumbed through the sink drain and trap, but i just thought it was odd that no visible vent was apparent. I guess i just worry too much. Thanks again for the replies.
