I recently completed plumbing project replacing the sewer pipes under my basement. Permited, approved, backfilled with a yard of pea gravel and new floor poured.

Now I'm left with the disposal of the dirt, concrete and some pipes and some other wood I was going to dispose. Plan A was to use 2 bagster dumpster bags. I figured a yard of gravel in means I've got about a yard of dirt coming out, so if I divide it between 2 bagsters I should be well within their 1 yard of dirt/concrete per bag limit. It didn't work out.

I need an alternative, and considering I'm looking at $60 for two more bags plus $208 for pickup, I'm looking for alternatives that cost less.

I'm thinking I'd take it to a landfill, but I really need somebody to explain how I find a landfill where I can just drop off a yard of dirt out of the back of my truck. I do have an option in my county (Oakland County Michigan) to drop off "clean" dirt, but I'm not sure mine qualifies as it has coal cinders mixed in - I can separate concrete that's larger than my fist and take that to a concrete place.

In general how should I search, or if anyone knows a particular place I can go in Oakland County Michigan let me know please.

Here's a pic of the present state. I'm not going to have time until later this week, but I want to get this out this weekend as it's holding us up from getting the house on the market to sell it.

I'm guessing to go that route I'd need to get the boards off the pile. Sounds like it would be worth a shot.

Oh yeah, the cost of the bag is the small part of the disposal. A $30 bag then $120 for pickup, additional bags are $80. Approximately. Depends on the area, the bag says $140 is typical. To my figuring if you're using 2 bags or definitely if you're using 3 bags, it's more economical to rent a real dumpster unless you are going to take more than a week to load everything. If I was in that boat I'd probably consider queing my junk up in the driveway until I could load it all at once.

With that said, I've found places I can take the dirt and concrete for free, I've got the wood separated out to put with my regular trash pickup, and I've got a craigslist ad in to see if there are any takers before I have time to shovel it into my truck this weekend, but so far I've just gotten responses of people wanting to be hired for $250 - which is probably a fair price since it'd cost that or more for any dumpster rental and pickup. But I'm liking the idea of costing nothing.

In my area there are at least 5 places that I see on a regular basis that have signs wanting Clean Fill. By this they mean dirt, rocks, blacktop, concrete, bricks, etc. The do not want wood, garbage, lawn clippings, tree branches etc. All of that crap goes to either the tipping station (wood, garbage) or the county compost pile (lawn clippings, tree branches).

That was something I was wondering about... As I said I have the wood separated to go into my regular trash pickup. But if I'm taking the dirt somewhere that says the take "clean" fill dirt, are the coal cinders a problem? I'm guessing it's not a concern if it's going in a landfill but it is if it's going in a trench to backfill over plumbing.

How many pick up loads will it take? How long will it take you to shovel it on and off? How far away is the unload site?

I'd pay the 250.00 and move on.
Isn't that the truth.
My son spent $600 to cut down some tree, and then we spent all day Saturday cutting them up an hauling them to the woods.

He saved $800, but has been working his but off since then to clean up.

I brought the gravel in one load, I reckon I can get the dirt in one load too. I have a few options within 10 miles. We got most of the dirt out in a few hours with carrying it out of the basement and up the stairs. Going from driveway to truck should be annoying but doable.
