I have a relatively new house, and notice that when my disposal is full of food, and water is backed up to the sink, I run the disposal to drain it and a pool of water forms under the kitchen sink.

I circled an area that I believe the water is coming from. It's the top of the disposal where it connects to the underside of the sink. That area has several openings, and is wet to the touch.

Is this area supposed to be opened? If not, how can I fix it?

Thanks!

Try to dry as much as possible and verify exactly where the leak is. I agree, It does look a little rusted there. They usually have a lock that unlocks.

Could be a partially clogged drain line. Also maybe the duck tape is leaking around trap area. Could just be the pic but also looks like drain pipe tilting in wrong direction. Easily fixed, just shorten the tail piece and pitch it in the right direction if needed.

Also when I zoom in, it looks like water dripping from the AAV. Maybe that has failed or you have a partial clog somewhere and it's backing up. Kitchen drains are notorious for this.

Get a good flashlight and verify exactly where it's leaking. Check all fittings, hoses, etc.

Hard to tell from the pics. The disposal collar rotates onto the flange that is screwed to the sink. It looks to me like the disposal isn't rotated enough and it's allowing water to leak by when it's full. The seal is made tighter the more it's rotated. My guess is the plumber didn't tighten it enough so the waste lines would line up.

It might the the picture, but none of the drain pipe joints look square.
