Hello! I am hooking up a used dishwasher to replace a bad one. I have a white and black wire coming from the wall. The dishwasher has a black, white and green wire. How or where do I hook up the green wire from the dishwasher??? Thanks!!!

The green wire needs to go to an equipment grounding conductor. Older wiring methods don't have an EGC. Is this your house? Is the dishwasher on an independent circuit? Are you able to run a circuit from a panel to a load center?

Yes this my house. no it is not on its own circuit. I believe it's actually tied into a couple plugs in kitchen along with garbage disposal. Ugh please tell me I don't have to run a separate circuit!!! Lol

The DW should at least be on a grounded circuit. It should not be on the small appliance branch circuits for the counter tops.

I have had a old non working dishwasher. I never used it. lol. Well I decided to get one and today I went to hook it up and that's what I found. After turning off the breaker and checking things out, I find that all my outlets along the counter, the dishwasher, microwave plug, the fridge plug and the washer are all on the same circuit. Wow I think I have issues!?!? Btw the house was built in 1970. No copper wire. I'm not sure Romex and bx are. It's a flat black wire wirh white and black wire.

Yes I love diy. I've done a lot of renos on my house. I just install a sump pump and ran a new circuit to it a couple weeks ago. I'm just unsure on getting a wire to through the walls to my dishwasher. Sounds like it will be difficult. I assume I couldn't run a wire off my outlet for the sump pump since it's the only thing on that circuit/ outlet???

Hmm. Well if getting out to your kitchen is tough to do, maybe a larger cable and a sub panel will make future improvements easier. If your wiring is that old, maybe it's time to think about what will go wrong next. Modern amenities don't comply with antiquated wiring methods too well...

I'm not an electrician, so maybe Jim can correct me if I'm wrong but...
You should really look into splitting the circuits in the Kitchen now or if/when you renovate the Kitchen. Kitchens use toasters, coffee makers, microwaves sometimes all at the same time that's too much for one circuit. You should have at least two GFCI protected circuits for counter top, alternating outlets to each. The dishwasher should be on it's own circuit. It sounds like someone may have added that dishwasher branch after the fact. If they chose wire without a ground it may be undersized as well. I have found ( and corrected) 14 wire spliced with wire nuts in the walls of 20amp circuits in my house. My house was built in 1968 and it has ground wires throughout. Jim, if that black flat wire (sounds like old romex) is indeed 12, can he run a ground to his copper plumbing?

Man I'm such an idiot! Lol I pulled the dishwasher out to take a better look at the wire and there is a ground wire. It inside the sheathing. The black and white were sticking out but the ground was inside. There was some electric tape that covered it. Well good news but I know I still need to fix this wiring. I haven't had any problems the way it is but need to fix it.
