dishwasher smell

2108 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  LookoutRanch
I just installed a disposal and noticed that the pipe that goes from the dishwasher to the disposal was disgusting. Our dishwasher had been smelling and it was just like the smell from this pipe. I tried to clean it out during the disposal installation and it helped the dishwasher smell some. Now the smell in the dishwasher is back in full force. Any recommendations on how to clean out that pipe??

Does the drain go directly to the disposal? It should go to an air gap installed at the top of the sink first. this will prevent any 'Garbage" from going back into the dishwasher. Not very sanitary without an air gap, that why plumbing code requires one. Seen a lot of installations without one though.

The water should pump out of the dishwasher up to a vent on your sink and then drain by gravity through a separate hose into the garbage disposal. I've seen that gravity drain hose clog and get very smelly.

You can take out that drain hose and clean it, and be sure to remove any gunk lodged in the connections.

Hook it back up and run your dishwasher with a mild solution of vinegar or maybe bleach to get rid of the smell.
