I'd like to eliminate my air gap in order to accommodate an R-O tap. Due to sink and stone counter space limitations, there's nowhere for R-O that wouldn't look weird. As I understand the function of an air gap, it's to prevent the introduction contaminants into the potable water system. I'm having a hard time visualizing dishwasher debris swimming upstream through my pressurized dishwasher supply line! On another home, our dishwasher drain line led directly into the disposal. We never had an issues I'm aware of. Mind you that home was built in 1967 and was on a private well vs. city water.

So without regard to code (I view this as easily reversible), please explain any potential problems with routing the dishwasher drain directly to the disposal. Or is there a better way to free up the air gap hole in my counter, and still achieve air gap functionality? Thanks!

Other then the sun exploding and the stars falling out of the sky. I see no problem as long as you make sure you install a high loop in the hose prior to attaching it to that disposal. Make sure you install that under cabinet hose loop and secure it up there. If your sink does get blocked it will route straight out your dishwasher onto your kitchen floor making a bad mess if you do not put the loop in the hose.

P.S. that is how us rural Ohio'ns do it....

I've installed dozens of dishwashers and never used an air gap. I always put a high loop with a clamp to keep it in place. Never had an issue. But be aware that some codes require the air gap.
