For sure you can add small amounts of soil over sod and the sod will grow through. But depending on how much you have to get rid of, I'd be more inclined to just fill up the spots in one go. Add seeds when they are warm enough to germinate and be done with the whole process in 10 days.

oh. while leveling the yard would be nice. most of the reason for this thread, is that i am looking for an economical = free, way to get rid of this dirt. filling my garbage can, (like i did with the plaster i had from the walls/ceiling) would take a long time to get rid of.

Depends on how much there is of it.
I see it all the time on Craigs list.
I have a local constrution company that lets me dump all the broken bricks and block and dirt that he turns around and sells a clean fill.
But i have to get it to him.

basicly, dirt from the basement, in 2 rooms that were never excavated when the house was built. so i am figuring that most of this is top soil (but of course, i don't "know"), as it is at the same grade as the outside. .
Ayuh,.... That's more than likely sub-soils, 'n Not top dirt...

While you can shim up the lawn with it, it'll need to be amended to support grass growth...

there is about 12x12x3'. and it would be removed over time. 2 buckets at a time .

while digging it out, how could(?) i tell where the top soil is and the sub soil begins ?

i just looked on CL. i see nothing about free/wanted dirt/soil. that could be a good thing, or a bad thing.

Around here the topsoil is a richer darker colour then the subsoil, which also starts to get pretty rocky.

If it was me I'd go ahead and give the seeds a try. If they don't germinate you can always amend it like suggested

It means to enrich the soil with whatever it needs. I just use manure for a fix all as it works very well for me. If the soil was very hardpacked and clay one could use peat moss and maybe some fertilizer.

Test the soil for structure with a jar and water as you dig. It's easy. How much dirt you can cover with at one time often depends on the grass species. I know of one warm season grass that if it was covered with 2 ft. of soil now it would be recovered by mid summer. Check with a professional like your county extension service. And we hope your extension agent is a little better than Hank Kimball.

In my younger days I had 2 or 3 truck loads of top soil delivered to fill and level some of the low spots in my back yard. I just ended up with different low spots elsewhere in the yard. Do you have room to make a raised bed garden with the dirt?

the excavation is now under way. there is broken blocks, hunks of concrete & asphalt, wood, cans/bottles, and some rubble. seems it was a bit of a dumping spot for someone. anyway, this is going to take me a good while to finish, as i am going to do it in between other projects.
