I just got done putting my new ceil fan and now was wondering about add a dimmer switch for it. Since I only add one power source going to the fan I hooked the lights and the fan motor up to the same power wire. Now what I want is to be able to use the light but I want it dimmer. If I replace the old switch with a dimmer and turn the fan on high and then dim the lights but also cause the fan to slow down, will it hurt the fan motor? Sorry for this being lengthy and so wordy, But was just wondering!!

Hi

A "dimmer switch" is not to be used with a motor their is however a similar switch called a motor or fan speed control. This would work the way you describe. The way they reduce the signal on a dimmer does not alter the ac wave form properly for the motor. Gust a note some motor will hum or buzz when the switches are used. The make wireless fan controls now that you could just hook up to full power and dimm the lights and control the fan speed. Variable fan speed controls used to be fairly common but because of motor designs the controls are more to 3 or 4 set speeds now. I am not sure that will be able to give the dimming effect you are looking for.

I found a variable speed unit on ebay but I have never ran at the same time with the light but I do not foresee a problem.

A link to the ideal method I am recommending (unless you want to run or have an extra wire ran so you could hard wire a dual control)
