Detached victorian house about to undergo complete reroof-slate tiles. Front of roof will have 18x12 slate tiles (brought in by roofer and included in the original quote), and rear will have 24x12 which are the current tiles which have survived the roof being stripped.

Has anyone come across this as an option and can anyone see any pitfalls? Will it be obvious the tiles on the rear are a different size to the front tiles for example. Any technical or future difficulties? Will it devalue the house's value ?

Thanks very much for your time in advance

Roofing alone does not devalue a house. It is the whole package and the neighborhood that it is in, along with current market values.

If the current slate does not have any type of membrane to stop water from getting inside the structure, in case the slates fail. That whole roof needs to come off and you need to tell the roofer that you want what you are paying for, since they work for you, not the other way around.

A properly installed slate roof does not need any underlay to be waterproof. The only reason to install underlay is to keep water out while the slate is being installed.
I suggest you read "The Slate Roof Bible" by Joseph Jenkins. You'll learn everything you ever wanted to know about slate roofing :) Everyone who owns a slate roof should have a copy imo.
P.S Make sure the new slates are from the same source as the original slates you are re-using, so the colour/texture is the same (subject to weathering differences of course) then the difference in size probably won't be noticed--but I am wondering why your contractor cannot source the same size as the original?
