Hi guys!
Found this 1x 6" plank that is notched into a 2 x 4 running diagonal inside wall while trying to build a new doorway. My father built the wall a couple decades back but sadly has passed away since then. Can you guys help me figure out if I can cut it out or brace it with another 2 x 4 to clear the doorway? In Southern California if that helps. Thank you for your time

It is put there to stop the wall from racking out of square. As it is let into the studs and nailed It is hard to imagine it not doing its job if you remove that bottom corner of it.

But you are in California, so maybe you should wait for an opinion from a local.

You might go into to the next stud bay and fit in a 2x10 block to spread any stresses to the bottom of the wall.
