I understand that the best way to degloss is to sand. But doing that on complex crown molding with 40 year old oil-based semi-gloss is a problem in oh so many ways.
Someone please give me some advice! Product specifics would be VERY helpful. I don't mind buying extra carbon filters for my air cleaners, or wearing a respirator. But sanding this stuff is just not realistic.

Steel wool or a sanding sponge would do the trick. Of course with steel wool you will want to remove any remnants of it on the crown moulding as it would react with latex paint and leave rust spots. A sanding sponge is easy to work with and would get into nooks and crannies because of its' flexibility. Liquid deglossers are ok, not ideal, but they are generally effective. Just pour some on a rag and rub it over the surface.

Just prime it first(after cleaning) with Zinnsers 123 , Fresh Start or any quality BONDING primer. The crown is not going to take any abuse and this will work just fine.:yes:
