OK--my contractor thinks I'm crazy, but I like that one wall of my kitchen is just lath (also "lathe"?). Everyone who comes through here says they like it. I don't want to stain it--it's this very period (20s) golden fir. I'd like suggestions for water-based varnish, if you have them? Or other suggestions, besides ripping it down.

Post a picture---Almost all solvent based finishes will darken the wood a lot.

Experiment--clear water based poly or lacquer might do.

By the way---that's a dust and fire hazard---but If you like it --it's your home--Mike--

If you like the look of the lath, I would finish the wall with sheetrock with all the traditional coatings. Paint it black and install the lath over it.
This way you get the best of both worlds. Safety and aesthetics.
