So I am taking on some long neglected projects while we are all locked away. I have a falling down (at least railing and stairs) 15 or so year old second story deck over a concrete slab. Among the problems is that I don't think it was attached properly to the ledger board and also no joist hangers. Also there were no railing posts installed. This was from the early 2000s when these houses and decks in Georgia where going up 10 at a time.

Another problem I have is that the door to the basement onto the concrete patio below was placed on the wrong side of the chimney. You exit to the uncovered side of the patio below. I don't know if extending the deck would be an option. Any input would be helpful in pl.anning.

First thing is to make it safe enough to be around.

You need to bring the posts and beams back in line .
A 2x4 against the post to stop he beam from slipping off, a 12 ft 2x4 leaned against the post and a 2x4 stake in the ground and hammer the top of the 2x4 down and when the post is back nail the 2x4 in place.

You may need a 10 pound sledge hammer.

This deck is hazardous and doesn't meet code.
Demolish it and build it right, with new materials.
Until you do that don't let anyone on it, even if you have liability insurance.
First you make it safe to inspect and then decide what has to go, much of the frame may be salvageable.

Thanks EVERYONE, for the input! It's all real useful info.

So I used a level on all the posts this morning and they are all level (at least they did that part right). It's actually the beam on top of the posts that is misaligned and needs to be hammered back and attached to the joists. I am wondering if I can still add joist hangers to both ends of the joists (ledger side and face beam side).

Regarding code, I am in a 94 house subdivision and fairly sure they were all built the same way between 2003 and 2006 .

I agree that making safe is job one and believe me nobody has been allowed out on that deck for four years.

Once I have it reinforced and safe then I can figure the issue of the exit door. I have two smokers and am an avid BBQer and exiting into the rain and not being able to to exit UNDER the deck gets on my nerves to say the least. Problem is that I would not be able to put support posts at 8 feet intervals to extend the deck without breaking up part of the concrete patio on the exposed side.

- First you deal with the detached joists, then you can install joist hangers.
At a minimum: You also have to address the unstable railings, detached railings, twisted deck boards, broken stair boards and stair railing. You may have other issues that the pictures don't show.

I didn't say to check it for plumb, I said to line it up so it would be safe to work on.
