Hi Folks,

I'm starting to install the beams on a deck project, and have a question. In this case, the posts are 6x6 treated lumber, and have been notched to accept the beams in this fashion:

The question i have is that the 2x12 beams are (of course) not all the same width, varying from 11" to 11 3/8". My first attempt has been to keep the tops even and shim the beam to post connection with a ripped (not crosscut) section of treated lumber. But now i'm wondering if i shouldn't just let the beams rest on the post and shim the joist connections.

The third option would be to not shim anything and just let things settle where they may, but I don't know if I really like that option.

Any suggestions before i hang the rest of them? Does it matter a lot either way?

Thanks!

Can you recut the post notches, all to the height of the lowest one? Very carefully, this time. :)
