Deck Joist - Using 2x6 deck boards to make Joists

My 12' x 14' deck is build with 2"x10"x12' joists on 24" centers and decked with 2"x6"x14' decking. Its all CCA Treated & 17 yrs old. I want to re-deck with composite decking but it requires 16" joist spacing, so intermediate joists need to be installed. My thought is to make laminated joists from the old 2x6 decking. The old deck boards are 14' long and will be cut back to 12'. Using 2ea 2"x6"x12' boards to make a 4"x6"x12' joist. These will be installed between the current 2x10 joists. The new joisting would be on 12" centers alternating between 2x10 and 4x6. Attachment will be made using commercially available joist hangers designed for this purpose.

There are 25 deck boards I will need 14 of them to make the new 4x6 beams. I believe I should get 14 solid boards out of the 25.

Thoughts anyone?

That is not a bad idea if all joists are good , I would rip a couple down to 3 1/2 and put solid blocking between the 2x10s under the 2x6s at 5 and 10 ft. Then you could just use singles if you want.
Thanks for the quick reply and idea. Might do both. Make the lam joists and install the cross supports. I have a 3 level deck. Upper one is 12'x14', mid level when expanded will be 6'x14' and the lower level is sort of a 12'x12' with 45deg angled corners which take a 3'x3' bit out of each corner. Need to rebuild and re-locate the stair case as well. Looks like the almost 70 yr old guy has an all Summer project.

If the joists are good I would protect the top of them this time with the tape.
You could use the 2x6 but no reason to double them up. Just cut them 22 1/2" long and put them perpendicular between the joists, like blocking... 16" on center. Then run your decking perpendicular to the way it is now.
