Hi all-- I hope everyone is healthy and safe and staying sane. I'm trying to keep my mind and hands occupied by building a grade level deck that will connected by stairs to an upper landing. I've got the deck plans squared away and in for permitting, but I'm having trouble drawing the plans for the landing. The landing will be freestanding (no ledger boards) in a corner of my masonry house. The problem is a downspout, which means that I won't be able to put the end joist against the wall of the house, which will be a problem for the picture frame decking I plan on installing. I also need to worry about how to attach the 4x4 railing posts in such a way that the railing can die into the brick exterior wall.
I drew up the attached picture of my current method of solving this issue and I wanted to run it by someone knowledgeable before I submit it to the permit authority. Basically, my plan is to pad out the end joists by sistering additional 2x10s to allow for a nailing surface for the picture framing. I'll also pad out a full joist to connect my railing 4x4 so that it lines up properly. All of the sistered joists are resting on one beam and it's not likely that anyone will walk on these, as it's directly adjacent to the wall.
This is a complicated description, but hopefully the picture is clear. Does anyone see any problems w/ this approach? Very grateful for any input or advice.
Thanks, and stay safe.
