Hello community,

I have a question regarding attachment of deck framing to existing 6x6 porch posts.

I am building a deck onto the front of my house. The deck will be 8' deep by 32' wide, approximately 24" off of the ground.

The deck is covered by a porch roof which is the same dimensions. The 6x6 posts are notched at the top where the 2x10 beams supporting the porch rafters are attached to sandwich the remaining section of the 6x6 post.

How should I attach the deck framing to the 6x6 posts? I know many people will say to notch the 6x6 posts to support the outside beam of the deck but I am unsure because the posts are already notched at the top for the porch roof. Would notching the 6x6 on the same side as where the porch roof beam is notched in on top sacrafice the integrity of the post? Could I also nail or screw cleats below the beam onto the 6x6 to hold the weight of the deck? If you need a visual depiction of what I am talking about I can upload a photo for an idea.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Unfortunately the design you describe is outside the Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide because you have a roof supported by the posts. This increases the load on the posts, and by notching the post to support the beams (the method described in the Guide) you risk weakening the posts against buckling. I suggest you discuss the project with your local building inspector, they may be able to point you towards a building code section that can help you decide which way to make the connections.

There are Simpson ties that allow you to attach a doubled 2x beam to the side of your 6x6. They have inverted flanges. So, if your beams run perpendicular to your ledger, joists will then be parallel to the house/ledger.

Can I use the djt-14z Simpson brackets on either side of each post to mount my beam to? ---instead of notching the posts? The permit is already signed by the permit office.

On the ledger side I would attach the ledger to the house (utilizing proper flashing) using lag bolts alternating between a single and double lag bolt pattern every 18" or so and hang the deck joists from the ledger using joist hangers.

One option is: The beam would be mounted (one 2x10 on each side of the posts with the posts sandwiched between. The joists would rest on the beam and be secured with proper hurricane ties

Other option: the beam would be one 2x10 mounted to the inside of the posts with the joists also mounted here (just like on the ledger side) with joist hangers. I suspect the double 2x10 ( option one) would be more solid but I think that with only 8' joists the joist hangers on both ends would suffice.

What do you guys think?

It would be up to the building inspector but most won't allow for posts to be sandwiched between the beam per code changes. I think most would agree, however, that the method would suffice in certain situations. If you're getting it permitted anyway, it only matters what the inspector says.

Cibula, Can you provide a model number for the Simpson tie you referred to with the 2x beam? Thank you for the info
I don't have the model number but if you google inverted joist hanger or inverted double joist hanger you'll find some pics. I think I ordered mine from Home Depot. They look like a joist hanger but the nailing flanges are inside not flared out. They are also made from a much thicker gauge steel. I used them to attach my beam to ledger not to post, so I'm not entirely sure if that would meet your needs, but worth a look.
