I'm trying to replace our dead bolt because it's keyed on both sides and for safety reasons, we want to put in one that locks on the interior side without a key. I have taken the screws out, but the lock won't pull apart. We have tried everything: pulling with the dead bolt locked and unlocked, turning the lock counter clockwise, nothing works. We even tried some WD40 in the crack between the lock and the door. Nothing:(. Any suggestions?

Hold one foot long (or so) piece of 2x4 flat against the face of the deadbolt, and rap the wood sharply with a hammer. Keep doing this on both sides, it should loosen it up.

Exactly what screws did you remove? There are two long ones that hold the lock parts together.

Some have a thin cover plate to hide the screw heads--Good luck trying to remove it--I usually destroy
the cover by driving a small screwdriver under the plate.
