I'm going to be doing some work in the detached garage over the summer and currently have a dead attic fan. I'm guessing it stopped working about two years ago. I have no idea what brand it is as it's probably 20 years old. It has a 5" diameter motor, a separate start capacitor, and was connected to a thermostat / humidistat, which I've turned down to the minimum temps. It's pretty hot up in the peak of the garage, as it's about 85 degrees outside and sunny today. I've since disconnected the power to the thermostat unit and connected it directly to the capacitor wires. Got nothing, so I assume the thermostat has nothing to do with this.

I'm wondering if I can bypass the capacitor and connect the power directly to the motor just to see if it runs. The shaft is not seized and spins freely. If it works I'll assume it's just a bad capacitor and pick up a new one.

Thanks

Connecting directly to the capacitor is not how that works.I would check the capacitor first with a meter too see if it’s good or not before just hooking up wires and energizing. That’s a good way to blow somethings up.
