I have a newly acquired Precor elliptical exercise machine that came without a power cord (bought at auction). It calls for a 12v 3amp 36 watt power supply. I know I need to use an adapter that’s 12 volts and min 3 amps but what about this 36 watt requirement? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wall watt adapter that specified it’s wattage.

12 volts at 3 amps is 36 watts. 12 volts at anything at or above the 3 amps capability will work fine, the machine will only draw what it needs.

Since your adapter will not be an original part you need to be certain you get the polarity correct. I've seen other dc plugs with positive in the center while some would have negative. Not sure if you are wiring this or utilizing a plug connection. Further help if needed. Pictures always help.

A photo of the Socket Inlet on the device may help.
There is often an indication there of whether the Positive connection is on the centre terminal and the Negative connection on the outer "ring" - or vice versa.

In short watts divided by voltage = amps or voltage X amps = watts.

In your case P=IxV
I=amps(current)
V=volts(voltage)
P=watts
