You will not get an explosion....the gas in the pipe does not have oxygen...so the only thing that can burn is any gas that leaks out...but it will be such a small amount that I would be surprised if you got any flame at all....and if you did....it would be real short lived....

I did just that a couple of months ago....no flame...

Yea....I'm thinking that as well....one would need a hand threader to thread the pipe....not easy on 1"...

Done commonly. But I relieve the pressure first.

once the gas is off ...and you bleed off pressure ...you can cut it with sawzall....ben sr

Actually any plumber would have a Hinged pipe cutter, that would cut right through the pipe, plus they can thread the end for the fitting.
