I have purchased a standard California stucco house in the Palm Springs area and would like to customize my landscaping. My plan is to put cultured stone on the exterior of my fireplace to match the stone on the exterior of the spa.

Do I need to do something to the fireplace exterior or can I just use thin set to glue the cultured stone to the current sprayed on plaster on the fireplace?

It will depend on the weight and type of stone used. Since the wall is already stucco'ed you should already have a drain plain and vapor barriers that are needed. But the type of adhesive may be determined by the stone used. Check recommendations from the supplier.
