Yes it is needed, when the outdoor temp is lower than indoor temp the refrigerant will migrate to the outdoor unit in off periods. Then when started your cimpressor will slug liquid, this will shorten life if not ruin it immediately.

Is this a neccessary item for a heat pump in Alabama?
The Trane heat pump in my home has one, the electrical wire going to it got old, brittle and water seep in to the wiring ausing it to burn the wire into. I can find the part but am hearing different stories that it is and is not needed.
Any ideas?
