covert downdraft to range hood

My current downdraft top does go up and over to the side and exiting the building around 7' high on an exterior wall.

I was wondering how can I determine how the vents are routed in the wall to see how to reuse this vent. There is a flap on the outside vent and I wonder if I can see or use a tape measure to see where it turns from.

It is possible the vent goes straight up above the stove then turn.. then the conversion might go more smoothly as I tear out the cabinet above the stove only.

most of the downdraft vents i have seen went under the floor. pictures would help. where does the vent exit the house now? i doubt that it would be run over the stove but stranger things have happened.

I have a soffit kind of thing with a built in fluroescent light which the cooking area is 1' lower than the rest of the house.

The ground is slab so it couldn't possibly be in there.

the exit is about 8' high and 8 feet over from the stove.
