Hello. I am trying to research the things I need to consider to add a front porch to my house. I am very new to construction and have never built anything like this. Maybe it is too much for me to bite off as a total beginner? I am thinking this would be on a slab with front posts and the back attached to the house. I will be contacting our city building department to find out about all the codes and requirements for my area.
My questions are:
1. Am I crazy and this is too much for a beginner?
2. Is a slab the right foundation for this?
3. Are there good resources or books you would recommend for starting this type of project?

Thanks for any help in advance. Attached is a picture of where I would like to put the porch and another of what I am thinking of building, scaled down to fit my size needs. Sorry, I have tried resizing and rotating the image.

Jules

A lot depends on where you are. In the north, frost is a consideration. In the south, hurricanes are a consideration. The second pic looks like snow, so support on soil below the frost line is important.
It is not as easy as it looks for a beginner. It all depends on your skill level and expertise.

As mentioned there are footing under those posts, they are sized by the load and the soil strength and are just below the frost depth for your area.

The beams going back to the house can go into the wall or hung on the wall but either way more studs are put in the wall for support.

Or posts can be put on the outside in some cases.

It looks like the second floor overhangs the lower wall.
You would have 3 choices to where to put the beams into the house.
It looks like # 3 would give you enough height and is the easiest to do but all three would require more studs in the wall for support.
