We are remodeling our kitchen. We stripped the wall paper and cabinets, bought new cabinet doors. We are now looking at the formica counter tops. The question is can we tile over formica? What would be the process?
I just tiled my counters. I read that you can tile over the current tops but not really recommended. I used two layers of 3/4" plywood for my base for tile. If I were you I would rip the current top off and then use plywood. That way you know you are starting with a fresh surface and you know everything is level and you won't have any problems down the road with the tile. I also used ditra on top of the tile instead of cement board. The extra cost isn't that bad and the extra work isn't bad either and it is well worth the effort in my opinion.
I posted this question sunday nite. Today at work my "left brain" sent me a nasty gram! "Why didn't you search the forum first?" Wow lots of good stuff in search.
