Hello.

My dogs chewed up some carpet and I'm trying to get an idea on price to repair the carpet.
My landlord will keep some of my deposit as it is clearly damage, but I want to get an idea on cost before we do the walk through.

It depends on whether you have a piece of replacement carpet. If not the carpet needs to be replaced.
It is also possible to remove a section from a closet.

That's what I'm thinking, cut a geometric shape from a closet and some seam tape, etc..... and it should work.

The patch will be obvious since the carpet from the closet will be look less faded and show no normal wear.

I would ask the landlord
He is within is rights for you to cover the deprecated value.

I've lived here for 4 years. At what time does the carpet fully depreciate?
If there is life still left in the carpet, I'm not opposed to pay a small prorated amount.

How long has the carpet been down, the LL can only depreciate it for 7 years? I would probably charge $100 to fix it but I charge less than most. Maybe a little cheaper if it's a wood subfloor ( I could staynail it then, which makes it faster to repair).

If the carpet was new when you moved in, he could probably get 1/2 replacement value.

If all the carpet matches, he probably can get the whole house. depends on the type of rental, too. In Sec 8 and other public housing, all the carpet must match and you cannot usually do that after a few months. Carpet colors and styles change too often.

Take a look at the backing on that carpet, it may be rotten from moisture or mold. When that happens it gets easy to tear. Or maybe you have a really big dog.
