I was going to replace the soffit and add vents myself at my house, but it probably a job I am not willing to tackle myself (i hate heights also). Does anyone have a general idea price per foot what the cost is to remove the existing wood and replace with aluminum?

It's like asking "how long is a rope"?? The only way to find out is to get contractors to come to your house and give you an actual quote. There are too many variables that no one could possibly price a job like that "sight unseen". And most users of this site are DIY'ers not contractors...

Exactly! That's why you need to get estimates from contractors in YOUR area of the country who can actually LOOK at the job and properly assess it. Prices vary widely in different areas of the country. You said you don't like heights. HOW HIGH IS IT?? That would be a factor. How bad is the existing wood? Is it just the plywood and 1"x fascia board that is rotted or is there damage to the framing members that needs to be addressed? Do you have gutters and do they need to be removed carefully to be reused or are they to be replaced also? Are the gutters too small to handle the amount of watershed causing them to backup into the soffit to cause the rot? My point was: if I tell you by an email I have a "coil" of rope in my hand and ask you "how long is it?", you have no way of knowing without coming to my house and measuring it. Try posting your question on ContractorTalk (click the link at the top of the page) and see how many estimates you get....
