I have a surface-mounted box that was nailed to the joist in the basement. The box has a duplex receptacle in it. When I unplugged a light fixture from the box to move it, the box came with the plug.

I would rather not try to re-nail the box, as there are wires INSIDE the box that I'd like to avoid w/ a hammer.

So I'd like to use screws.

Would screws be okay? Is there a preferred type of screw for this application? Does code say anything about this?

Sorry for the dumb question.

just use woodscrews....make sure they bite into the wood at least an inch. That's just my personal preference...not sure if there's an actually rule for it.
