We presently have a 20 year old GE electric cooktop with downdraft ventilation that is in need of replacement.

The first problem is that it has front mounted controls so the cutout comes through the front of the countertop in all the new ones are designed differently so they require countertop (about 2") in front of the cooktop when installing. The countertop is part of a large island and I really don't want to replace the entire countertop for both cost and aesthetics reasons. Secondly nobody makes new electric cookouts that use coils for heating elements, everything nowadays is glass top which from everything I've seen is very hard to keep clean on an everyday basis and is subject to scratches. We have natural gas in the house but neither my wife nor I have ever cooked on it and really don't want to now.

If anyone the know of any other cooktops that are available that will fit our needs? Any ideas how to solve the mounting question?

20yr old GE downdraft with front controls? can't picture it. do you have a model/serial #? must have been sourced. if so, may be replacement. if you're attentive to the new glass cooktops -no problem keeping them nice. gas is the way to go for cooktops but you said you don't care for gas. you could always put a slide in range there with a pop up vent.. have you been to a large full service dealer-to discuss your problem? there's a lot of different stuff out there now.

That' s a --370B9. looks like, as HW/man said, "out of luck".. fix that one or get a countertop/contractor to see what they can do. time for a new kitchen? :)
