I bought my house 2 years ago in the summer, it is a 50 year old home with what the inspectors believe to be a 30+ year old HVAC system. I have a gas furnace in the basement and the outside unit. It is currently still working... but not sure how much life is left. I have been given a Trane package unit that uses gas and electric, I want to have it installed but have been told that I will need complete new ductwork installed. Is this true? Would it be more trouble than it's worth? it seems that ductwork would be cheaper than a new unit... any thoughts? I am not sure what to do... HELP. I do not want to be taken advantage of because I don't know anything about any of this, I am a young woman and homeowner and when it comes to this topic I am out of my comfort zone.

you are talking about MAJOR modification. I would not attempt to switch to a package unit. Stay with a split system. The condenser (outside unit) can always be moved when it is replaced.

whats the voltage on that rooftop unit and the install location with duct work coming out from the house the electrical differences into an exsisting house this all needs to be considered...check the voltage rating if it's 208V/230V 1 phase right on the unit tag your in the right direction...
