Control top and bottom outlets independently with two toggle switches

2604 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  golfer2000
I got a parts washer for free and I changed it from one switch and one outlet to two switches and two outlets. I followed the electric schematic to the t but its not working right. When I turn on one switch both outlets become live. Obviously I want one switch to control one outlet, and the other to control the other. Halp pls.

The tab betwen the to hot terminal has to removed. This will let each outlet work serperatly
Additionally
The green wire from switch on right to outlet needs to be changed to a color other than green or white.
The ground needs to be attached to box
The white wire from the top switch should also be changed to black. The conventions on wire colors and purposes have not been followed.

how does that look? It works great, thanks to everyone.

That's just excellent, right there. I love it when good advice is given, and followed.

Make sure to scrape/sand off the paint where the ground wire connects to the box, if you haven't already.

I like the timely and accurate help here too! I did scrape off the paint, more so on the other side though. Probably not the right grounding screw, but Im pretty sure it gets the job done.
Much nicer. Congrats.
