Hi. I am going to connect a 30 amp inlet box to my main panel and I would like to know the conduit size for the wires. I have 8 gauge wire. The inlet box will be located right next to the main, inside the garage. thanks.

and yes this is for a generator-- I have a square D interlock kit and a double pole 30 amp breaker.

I went to HD, I saw "rigid" conduit. will that meet code also?
Rigid metallic conduit is too hard for a DIYer to use unless you have the proper tools for cutting, reaming and threading. More expensive as well. Rigid non-metallic (pvc) conduit is acceptable in most jurisdictions.

As an aside, DO NOT plan to use a generator inside a garage.

lol, yes I know. lots of inexperienced people do not know that....I do have much more experience with generators than most. I am a signalman for a class 1 railroad, so lots of experience wiring and running generators during storms. Since this is at my house, I am trying to follow code (not required at work).

one last question--I got a reliance 30 amp inlet box, inside the box there is a wire for grounding the box.Is that required?....wire goes from the L14 plug (G) to a little ground post on the box, then there is another wire on the post. I was just going to hook the ground wire from the generator cord to the L14 and unhook that, but not sure if it is needed. thanks
