My 12 seer carrier compressor was ruined in the Sandy flood. I have a Carrier fb4anf042 air handeler in the attic and the opprutunity to purchase a 1 yr.old Rudd 14AJM42A01 14.5 seer compressor.
Can anyone tell me if the units are compatiable ?

if the btu capcity and voltage is the same as old one.... then alls left is the mounts and pipeing ,and it shud work ,,long as new compressors good and works

Coils for 14 SEER plus are very large, and often take either an X13 or VS blower motor to get it. Your made for 12 SEER coil will have fewer tubes in it and fewer fins in it, which will lower heat transfer. Probably won't have the right size meering device either, unless it has a TXV on it.

Its measure by testing it at 5 different outdoor temps to see if it reaches its rated capacity within 10 minutes, and by checking the amount of energy it used in that 10 minutes.

2 test were conducted by 2 different companies pairing 10 SEER indoor coils with 13 SEER condensers. Some got only 8 SEER, a few got a mid 11 SEER. But had to be over charged to do it.

in your case you are only replacing the compressor, correct? no individual component is SEER rated. SEER comes from the system as a whole and my guess is that the compressor alone doesn't play that much of a part in overall SEER. if the compressor is designed for a 14.5 SEER system, it may just be a slightly more efficient compressor, which will probably not really affect your overall SEER much at all because none of the other components are higher efficiency. my guess is that it will bump it up just a hare.

personally, i would buy a compressor that is an exact replacement of the original. but that is just me.

He's talking about a condenser. The model number he posted is for a Rheem condenser. Not just a compressor.

ahh. so if you can actually lose overall efficiency with a higher efficiency condenser mismatch, it sounds like it makes a lot more sense to just try and match it. unless of course he's getting it for a really good price, then maybe it doesn't matter so much.

sorry guys, Im a layman and yes its a condenser, not a compressor. Its less that a year old and I'm only paying $100.00 for the unit. Can I end up getting less than the 12 SEER efficency I am currently enjoying ?

Its possible. We can't tell you for sure one way or the other. Since no one has tested the mismatch.
