"Repipe specialists". "Change out those old and rusted pipes." "It can often be done in one or two days." The ads show brown water coming out of shower heads. "Right now we'll throw in a free tankless water heater." At least a couple companies are advertising this heavily in my area. I wouldn't think this is a simple project. I would think it would require ripping out a lot of walls and not something I would consider unless totally, absolutely necessary. What is their angle here?

I'd avoid it like the plague. You need a plumber if you don't want to do it yourself. Re-plumbing a home is an in-depth job that shouldn't be done in a hurry by people that probably don't do the sizing calcs or have any idea what they're really doing.

Mine was re-plumbed years ago (polybutalene lawsuit settlement). We moved into a hotel for a week.
Tankless W/H's are expensive, so I would assume if they are willing to toss in a free one, the price for the repiping must be sky high...!!
